The fig is the first plant mentioned by name in the Bible. The fig tree is the most important fruit tree in Israel, along with the olive tree and the grapevine. It is popular as a shade tree because of its large leaves. Figs were an important food and highly prized for their sweetness. They could be dried or pressed into patties and stored well. As a remedy, fig plasters were used for ulcers. On the fig tree the fruits ripen one after the other in the period from June to October.
The fig is a symbol of well-being and peace.
